The Golden Globe Awards are among the most important ceremonies for any actor or personnel involved in making films and TV shows.

During the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, the host Ricky Gervais roasted a renowned celebrity with a gag that has lasted for years and is often used by several people to crack a joke. So, what is Felicity Huffman’s License Plate Joke?

The host, Ricky Gervais, opened the 2020 Golden Globe Awards by roasting several celebrities, including Felicity Huffman, by stating that he came to the event in a limo and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman. The actress went to prison for trying to buy a college seat for her daughter, Sophia Macy, instead of getting it through the SAT. Apparently, convicts can serve less time in prison by making license plates.

Before we delve into Felicity Huffman’s license plate joke, it is essential you learn why the joke was being referred to her and the time she spent in the Federal Prison.

In 2019, Felicity Huffman was involved in a college scandal that cost her not only her reputation but also prison time.

To place her daughter, Sophia Macy, in a prestigious university, Huffman worked with William Singer to cheat through the entrance exam and arranged her daughter’s exam at a special location.

While Sophia did attain a great score, the scam involved several other famous people, among whom Huffman paid the least amount and even decided against it, but she went through it anyway.

Nonetheless, she was at fault, and Huffman sincerely accepted her charges and appeared guilty during her court time, apologizing to everyone who might have been affected by her.

Following the scandal, Huffman received a 14-day federal prison time, a $30,000 fine, and 250 hours of community service. Since she spent a few hours in jail after she was arrested, she only served 11 days out of 14.

My favorite #RickyGervais jokes

– Felicity Huffman License Plate
– In Memoriam too white
– Martin Scorsese too short for rides
– DiCaprio date

Overall though very rushed, timing seemed off – but I think he ultimately won over the crowd! 🤣#GoldenGlobes  #goldenglobes2020 pic.twitter.com/n0KdD8Ua8M

In the midst of several jokes slammed against celebrities, the most remembered was the license plate joke. The host’s joke specifically targeted Felicity Huffman, who served in prison for her college scandal in 2019.

Gervais roasted Huffman, saying, “I came here in a limo, and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman.” Apparently, they decrease the prison time for those who make license plates.

Coincidentally, Huffman also spent 11 days in prison when she was supposed to do that for 14 days. However, since she spent hours in jail before she was proven guilty, they took that into consideration.

Almost everyone present at the awards knew that he was referring to Felicity Huffman’s prison time, and the reactions were quite unexpected.

Fave joke #2 – “I came here in a limo tonight and the license plate was made by Felicity Huffman. No, shush. It's her daughter I feel sorry for. OK? That must be the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to her. And her dad was in Wild Hogs”. Amazing start!

While the joke in and of itself was hilarious to many, he further quoted that her husband, William H. Macy, starred in Wild Hogs, meaning even the college scandal couldn’t be compared to the disappointment the film has brought.

How Did People React to the Huffman’s License Plate Joke?

While not everyone is knowledgeable that inmates are given less prison time if they make license plates, a huge part of the audience is aware of this fact. Here are some notable reactions:

I was born with dark humor.
When Gervais said his new license plate was made by a Felicity Huffman …🤣🤣🤣 that was right up my alley.
All those “too soon?” jokes are my favorite.
