Richard Orion Kerkering was born on April 4, 2001. He is an American professional baseball pitcher who is currently playing with the Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball (MLB). Orion debuted in the team on 24 September 2023, achieving one of the biggest milestones of his career.
His baseball journey started as a pitcher for the South Florida Bulls while attending the University of South Florida. Initially, he played as the starting pitcher of the team and soon transitioned to become the team’s closer.
In that season, Kerkering made 19 appearances which included 10 starts, and posted a record of 5 wins and 7 losses with three saves and an ERA of 5.72. Impressively, he struck out 91 batters over 67⅔ innings.
In 2021, Orion showcased his skills in ‘collegiate summer baseball’ with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Soon after, he got selected for the “Philadelphia Phillies” and was drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He began his professional journey in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League Phillies.
His performance here brought him the promotion to the Single-A Clearwater Threshers. His performance stood out with an impressive record of 4-1 win-loss ratio and an outstanding 1.51 ERA, striking out 79 batters and securing 14 saves in 53 2⁄3 innings pitched. Orion was honored with the organization’s Paul Owens Award for pitcher of the 2023 season.
Soon, he was called up to the Phillies’ 40-man roster and made his major league debut just two days later. In his debut match, he pitched a perfect 1-2-3 8th inning with two strikeouts against the New York Mets and maintained flawless innings throughout the game.
