The recent attack on Israel and its retaliation has raised international concerns about the possibility of a gruesome war and violation of human rights.
On October 7, 2023, the Hamas Militant group in Palestine, designated a terrorist group by the U.S., U.K., and European Union, launched a surprise attack on Israel by land, sea, and air. The Hamas military commander Muhammad Al-Deif stated the reason behind one of the largest and deadliest attacks on Israel was the desecration of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem and the seizure of Gaza. These attacks were initiated as “Al-Aqsa Storm” and have reportedly claimed over 700 innocent lives. Israel has declared a “state of war” and retaliated with attacks on Gaza, with over 400 casualties of Palestinian civilians on day 2 of the war.

Given the short context, Israel and Palestine have been at loggerheads since 1948, after the U.N. proposed Resolution 181, also known as the Partition Plan.
Amidst the seizure and retreats, the first Palestine uprising was led by the Muslim Brotherhood. Among them was Sheik Ahmed Yassin, who was at the forefront of the revolution. However, his radical opinions pushed him to create his own group, unlike the Palestine Liberation Organization. Thus began the inception of the Hamas militant group.
By 2007, the group gained considerable influence and momentum in Palestine politics and won the elections. Currently, the Hamas militant group governs the Gaza Strip.
This radical group has alliances with Middle Eastern countries like Syria and entities like the Shiite Islamist Hezbollah in Lebanon. The mutual opposition to U.S. and Israeli policies led the allies to support Palestine in the conflict.
Meanwhile, Iran has shown evident support for the Hamas group, considering its history with U.S. interference and personal motives against Israel. Iran supplies weapons, technology, and training to build its own arsenal of advanced rockets to Hamas.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel by intruding on the border of Karem Shalom Crossing at around 6:30 a.m. Around the same time, the group fired missiles toward Israeli territory, leading to mass casualties.
Then, around 7:30 a.m., the militant group of around 50 men broke into people’s houses along the Gaza border, killing and abducting innocent Israeli civilians. One of the worst attacks was during the Supernova music festival, killing around 260 people and taking several festival attendees as hostages.
The inhumane atrocities have deemed this attack as one of the largest and deadliest terror attacks in decades.
Why Was Israel Attacked by the Hamas?
Hamas attacked Israel on the grounds of several years of geopolitical conflicts. However, this time there seems to be an additional reason for the rising tensions between the two nations.
According to Hamas military commander Muhammad Al-Deif, this incursion was an answer to Israel’s desecration of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, which is hailed as the most sacred and holy place for Islam. The Hamas group has deemed this invasion the “Al-Aqsa” storm, killing and abducting over 1000 civilians and taking Israeli soldiers as hostages.
Israel has declared a “state of war” against Palestine and waged an attack on Gaza the next day with air missiles. The number of innocent Palestine civilians is rising as of writing this article.
