Coronado Bridge is one of the crown jewels of San Diego. It’s a thing of beauty to be admired. It’s used for regular travel to and from California- San Diego. But that’s unfortunately not the only reason the public uses this iconic bridge.
The Coronado Bridge is also known as the suicide bridge because of the sheer number of people who use it to end their lives. Just in early March 2023, a 39-year-old woman jumped off the bridge, following which the bridge was closed. Now, again the bridge was closed off by the police.
Coronado Bridge was closed eastbound and westbound in the early hours of the day between only 7:00 to 8:00 A.M. because of police activity. The authorities didn’t reveal the reason behind closing the bridge or the police presence. People think it’s because there was an unfortunate suicide case again or a standoff between a civilian and the police for which force had to be deployed.
What Happened on Coronado Bridge Today?
Fox News reported that the Coronado Bridge was closed in both the east and west directions because of police activity. The City of Coronado tweeted around 7 A.M. that both the eastbound and westbound lanes were closed due to undisclosed police activity.
At around 7: 35 A.M., people tweeted that the authorities had opened the eastbound lanes but that the westbound ones were still closed. By 8 A.M., both directions were open, and traffic flowed normally. Police didn’t release any official reason for the blockage.
But people online were curious, and on the San Diego subreddit, a poster asked why the delay occurred.
One commentator wrote: “’Police activity’ basically always means Jumper.” Another backed them up and said, “Jumper. Happens monthly. Never in the news.” However, another poster revealed that it was a standoff, not someone attempting to take their life. They commented:
“It wasn’t a jumper this morning. Standoff at the toll area. Police were using either megaphones or speakers to talk to him, and then at some point, he appeared to get arrested. If he started at the top to jump, I didn’t see it. And jumpers usually cause gridlock, not blocked-off closures.”
Another Reddit poster backed up this and said:
“Vehicle with a distraught person. Never jumped, and I don’t think he was ever actually out of the vehicle, but it took some time. Originally stopped on eastbound lanes. Police arrived, and he moved down the bridge and returned on westbound. Bit of a cat-and-mouse game for hours after that.”
There’s no way to determine what actually happened because the police haven’t released the reason for closing the Coronado Bridge both ways suddenly. However, most seemed to think that there was a suicide, but the police didn’t report it for fear of copycats and to prevent it from being sensationalized in the media again.
But others were of the view that the comments about there being a standoff between a person and the police were true. After all, if there was a suicide incident, it somehow would have at least made the local news, or there would have been some chatter about it online.
