Once upon a time, in the serene enclave of Montgomery, Alabama, the day– August 5, 2023, marked a momentous occasion. Amidst the calm waters of Montgomery Riverfront Park, one man was simply doing his job.
The hardworking employee wakes up every morning to get to his job and abide by his pledge to protect the people at any cost. Every day the dock worker ensures that a safety protocol is followed and would put his life on the line to save anyone.
As per his usual duties, he was directing the boats where to park to avoid any collisions. During the weekends, the park is bustling more than usual. Hence, it’s imperative that the dock worker manages the incoming boats/ships towards the dock.
On one such busy day on Saturday, the dock worker received intel that the Harriott II Riverboat, carrying several passengers, would be shortly arriving near the docks. As per the protocol, he sprung into action, ensuring that the space was clear.
But he spotted a pontoon boat floating near the dock, taking up the allotted space. He exercised his authority and asked the boat owners to vacate and move the boat. It’s the standard procedure.
One of the passengers from the boat aggressively approached the dock worker and started swinging at him unprovoked. And then, in the now epic move, the worker tosses his cap in the air and fights back in defense.
But he was outnumbered by other white people on the same boat. After several minutes of fighting alone, a few black men came to his defense, and a brawl ensued. It was nothing short of an action film (although we don’t condone any kind of violence).

However, special mention to those who recorded the video, otherwise the world would be deprived of the solidarity of brotherhood. Nevertheless, authorities arrived on time before the fight could take an ugly turn. Some men were seen fleeing the scene as the cops arrived. One of them was identified as Chase Shipman, owner of Vasser’s Mini Mart– read here for the entire account.
But that’s not even the main event; the real entertainment began on Twitter. Black Twitter has been resurrected again, especially after the Carlee Russell debacle. The Montgomery brawl memes have conquered the Twitter trending page; all you have to do is get a tub of popcorn. Here’s our compilation of the best viral memes on the Alabama Riverfront fight.
The Chronicles of a Folding Chair
The folding chair has now become synonymous with a weapon of destruction, kind of like Thor’s hammer. The chair now symbolizes something greater– a sign of retaliation against racism. But the memes are premium chef’s kiss.
Again, we do not advocate for violence, as some reports floated that a woman was hit by the folding chair too.
Avengers Assemble
Netizens were inspired, exhilarated, and rushed with pumping adrenaline when they saw how a group of black men came to the lone man’s defense. Black Twitter immediately referenced the Avengers’ final scene.
Although the real connotation behind this meme is much more profound, it denotes the decades of systemic racism even after slavery ended. This incident implied that there is no superior being in this society; everyone is equal. And if you can’t accept it, be prepared for a pushback. An eye for an eye makes the world go blind. But this quick karma was long overdue…. Again, not condoning violence.
The New Juneteenth– A New Leaf Of Black History
Some netizens even deemed this incident a significant chapter in Black History. The fight against slavery, the civil rights movement, and the countless deaths of innocent black people still resonate in the present day (RIP Emmett Till).
Black Twitter was swarmed with memes comparing this brawl as a massive leap for black people standing up against the bigoted and disgusting mindset. They want August 5 to commemorate this event as a National Black Holiday.
The Epic Commentary
Moving on to some unhinged non-serious memes. Just watch this commentary, but make sure you are alone. You will die laughing.
Live Action Adaptation
Black Twitter never disappoints. Watch this recreation of the actual events. This is some next-level creative genius.
Aquamayne, #FadeInTheWater
Even if the whole video was a cinematic experience, one scene completely stole the show. When the Harriet II boat arrived at the dock, a young man dived into the water immediately when he saw that the helpless dock worker had been attacked. He swam across to the dock, climbed the platform, and started throwing hands. Netizens commended his courage; thus, he was named Aquamayne, Scuba Gooding Jr, Ja’Michael Phelps, and more.
Soon, #FadeInTheWater started trending, and people couldn’t get enough of the young man.
Here are a few more memes to make your day…enjoy!
At the end of the day, this is a tragic incident and shouldn’t have occurred, but what are your thoughts on this case? Do you think that the brawl was unnecessary? Should the police arrest only the instigators or both parties?
