The ESPYS of 2023 took place yesterday night, which aims to recognize athletic achievements, celebrate exceptional moments, pay tribute to outstanding athletes, and showcase exhilarating musical performances.
U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team received The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, whereas Liam Hendriks, the Chicago White Sox pitcher, was also recognized for his perseverance with The Jimmy V Award. And we also saw that the Buffalo Bills training staff received The Pat Tillman Award for Service, which was well-deserved.
It was a great night celebrating these outstanding athletes and their achievements!
What Are the ESPYs?
Have you heard of the ESPY Awards? It’s a really big deal in the sports world!
Every year (except for 2020), ABC gives out this amazing trophy to recognize outstanding individual and team athletic achievements and other sports-related performances during the previous calendar year.
ESPN used to be in charge of the awards, but starting in 2022, they’ll only broadcast replays of the event (with the exception of 2020, when they aired it live). Before 2004, fans were the only ones who got to decide who won the ESPY Awards.
But now, an esteemed panel of ESPN personalities, sports journalists, broadcasters, executives, and athletes vote on the winners. It’s truly an honor to receive such a prestigious award!
What Does ESPY Stand For?
The ESPY, or Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, is an award presented by ABC Network and ESPN to acknowledge outstanding individual and team athletic achievements.
They’re all about celebrating extraordinary athletic achievements by individuals and teams. The awards were started in 1993 to give sports the same kind of recognition as the Grammys, Emmys, and Academy Awards.
In the early years, fans voted to choose the winners. But since 2004, an exceptional group made up of sportswriters, broadcasters, and experts, has taken on the job of selecting the winners.
