Napoleon Bonaparte, born on August 15, 1769, was a highly effective general in the French revolutionary army and emperor of France from 1804 until 1815.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest military leaders in history, he was trained in France and is considered a hero in the realms of practical philosophy, philosophy of war, rights, and state.
Despite disputes and misconceptions surrounding his legacy, he remains a triumphant and victorious commander.
Did Napoleon Fire Cannons at the Pyramids?
There is no evidence to suggest that Napoleon fired a cannon at the pyramids during his conquest of Egypt. However, it is a known fact that he visited the pyramids in person and participated in a major battle that could be seen from their location. It is also highly unlikely that any damage to the pyramid tops would have gone unnoticed in the 225 years since the battle took place.
Despite the myths surrounding Napoleon’s trip to Egypt, none of his fellow travelers have claimed that he actually entered a pyramid.
According to Historian author Shannon Selin, Bourrienne, Napoleon’s personal secretary, there were no plans for him to invade the pyramid. Instead, he encouraged his companions to climb it for entertainment purposes. In fact, he even challenged them to see who could reach the top first while enduring the scorching Egyptian sun.
Did Napoleon Shoot the Nose Off the Sphinx?
No, Napoleon was also not responsible for the destruction of the Sphinx’s nose, as against popular Urban legends.
Contrary to popular belief, the notion that Napoleon ordered his troops to use the Sphinx’s nose for target practice, causing its destruction, is false. In actuality, the Sphinx’s nose was already missing by the time Napoleon and his army arrived in Egypt.
However, historical records indicate that during Napoleon’s reign, his army of artists produced exquisite artwork featuring the Sphinx, which was often depicted without a nose in those depictions.
Historically, it is believed that Muhammad Saim al-Dahr was responsible for the vandalism of the Sphinx by hiring a group of men to remove its nose. The Sphinx was considered a false deity at that time, and the purpose of destroying its nose was to diminish its significance.
Despite the challenge of identifying the creator of the ancient monument due to the disfigurement, numerous specialists from different countries have been tirelessly working to reconstruct the Sphinx’s face for many years.
