Archive of Our Own (AO3) was reported offline on Monday. The website is among the top respiratory fan-written works. Many people attempted to log in but were unsuccessful. Social media sites like Twitter and Reddit were flooded with tweets reporting the issue.
In the U.S. alone, around 4000 users failed to log in. They reported an issue related to Downdector on Monday afternoon. Users were left to speculate as to what actually happened to the website.
As posted by Archive of Our Own (AO3), the website encountered a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The official account hasn’t revealed the timeline for when it will be fixed. However, they are taking countermeasures to resolve it.
How Will Archive of Our Own (Ao3) Get Fixed?
Archive of Our Own (AO3) discovered that at 2 p.m. Monday, the website went down. The portal faced a DDoS attack where malicious activities took place in the form of numerous service requests to incapacitate the website. They announced the development on Twitter exactly seven hours after the attack.
According to a popular tabloid, officials responded to the attack and addressed that –
“We have not been contacted by anyone claiming credit for the DDoS as of this time, so there is nothing we can say for certain.”
The organization is constantly updating its development on various channels, such as Twitter and Tumbler.

Will the Portal Resume Working Anytime Soon?
A DDoS attack is difficult to recover from, but it isn’t impossible. Once the attack is over, it will take time for AO3 to evaluate what damage it has caused in order to plan the recovery. If AO3 has a defense in place, it will soon resume working. However, if it doesn’t have a defense in place, it will take time for them to recover entirely.
It would be best for AO3 to up their defense going forward. At the time of publishing, the website was still down.
What do you think about the attack? Has AO3 paid less attention to cybersecurity?
