Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, has found himself in an unsavory condition with baseball fans due to his insensitive remarks and actions. To their credit, baseball viewers are very vocal about their dislike.
As the 2023 MLB draft took place on Sunday, the crowd had one goal and one goal only, to boo till Manfred’s ears popped. While the commissioner looked unaffected by the boos all around, it was a scene worth witnessing.
Fans let the boos rip at Lumen Field as soon as Manfred took the stage. Of course, the historic booing made its way to social media via memes.
Yet all of this raises the question, why does everyone hate the MLB Commissioner so much? So I guess it’s time you judged yourself after reading the facts.
Why Is the MLB Commissioner Booed?
On Sunday’s MLB draft, baseball fans booed Manfred Rob as soon as he took the stage. Chants of “Sell the team” and “Stay in Oakland” were going around in the crowd. There are several causes behind the hatred and booing, from calling the World Series Trophy a piece of metal to causing the loss of Ken Rosenthal.
Since Manfred took over MLB, the relationship between owners and player’s unions has worsened. He has not worked towards better relations, causing bitterness to grow.
As a commissioner of the MLB, it was unexpected that he would call the World Series Trophy just a hunk of metal. During an on-camera interview with ESPN, he called the trophy “a piece of metal.”
The statement drew criticism from players as well as fans. Despite apologizing for the mistake, fans never forgave Manfred for hurting the sentiments of the whole sports community.
The handling of the Astros cheating scandal was also not appreciated by fans as it might have cost the Yankees a World Series appearance. MLB did a thorough investigation and announced that the Houston Astros did cheat during the 2017 season and postseason. Manfred’s solution was simply to suspend the manager and general manager for one season, and no one was held accountable.
Even more of his pettiness came to play when Ken Rosenthal was targeted and ousted. Rosenthal is one of the most famous baseball reporters with a genuine love for the game and a unique flair.
Rosenthal worked for the MLB since 2012, but in 2020, he mentioned the things he didn’t like about Manfred’s handling. As a result, he was suspended, and his contract was never renewed. Luckily, the reporter is still a broadcaster for FOX Sports Network, and he continues his journalism.
The best outcome of Manfred’s decision is probably the memes that have resulted from them. As a baseball fan, what do you think of his steps?
