Distinguishing real people from AI bots is the real struggle in today’s world. Even more so is the effort to differentiate genuine people from those just running after clout. The recent controversy of Erica Marsh, a Twitter account, goes the same way.
The US Supreme Court’s decision to ban affirmative action has caused the educational society to break out into protests all over social media. Posts upon posts are being uploaded to express polarizing opinions on the matter.
At such a crucial and sensitive time, a Twitter account by the name of Erica Marsh enters the stage to shake things up a bit and rile up both the parties who are in favor and against the ruling.
Who Is Erica Marsh?
Erica Marsh is a Twitter account handle that went viral due to tweeting a flaming opinion on the social media site. The tweet stated that the Supreme Court decision is a direct attack on Black people are they cannot succeed in a merit-based system. The underhanded remark made people aghast as comments started flooding in.
Many think the tweet was made by a conservative who is just acting to be a liberal. The person behind the account is supposedly posting tweets to provoke conservatives so they can think this is what liberals are like.
Others assume that it is just an AI account that is being used to gather a big following, harvest data, or for some hidden agenda. However, the fact that the account has a blue tick mark has made things more confusing.
Erica Marsh is a character from One Tree Hill, a tv series that was aired from 2003-2012. The image used in the Twitter account is also of the same fictional character portrayed by Katherine Bailess. Many assume it is an AI-generated image, and the fictional character’s name suggests that it is indeed a bot.
An apology was posted from the account after the previous tweet went viral. The person has clarified that they did not mean to suggest Black individuals are less intelligent than other races. However, it was too late, as everyone considered the previous statement true and the apology just a way of backing out from the heat.
Reactions to Erica Marsh’s Tweet
People on Twitter have called out Erica for the racist tweet that suggests Black people are less intelligent than people belonging to other races. While the intention to denounce the banning of affirmative action was correct, the execution of the tweet made the account come under fire.
As expected, reactions to the tweet suggested extreme anger at the account holder. Black people have tweeted their achievements as a response to prove their merit, and conservatives have used the tweet to prove that liberals are racist.
Others have simply dismissed the existence of a real person behind this tweet and regard the tweet as rage bait.
Do you think a real person is behind this highly insensitive viral tweet? Or is it just a parody account created for clout?
