The Gaines couple has made castle-in-the-sky a reality by buying a literal castle and turning it into their dream house.
Fixer Upper is a reality TV show on HGTV that follows the endeavors of a married couple, Chip and Joanne Gaines. The talented couple has renovated over 100 homes with the design-contractor tag team. Joanne is the creative brain behind the designs, while Chip is the strategic mastermind contractor.
Together they have the capability to turn an utterly barren house into a glamorized farmhouse style aesthetics.
Based in Waco, Texas, their ethics and staying true to their craft make them so reliable in the community and admired by the viewers. Plus, a couple that works together is the ultimate level of relationship goals.
One major highlight of the series was when the couple bought an actual castle. This was their largest-scale project, as they documented every bit of the renovation process.
When Did Chip and Joanna Gaines Buy A Castle?
Chip and Joanne Gaines took the huge plunge of buying a castle in 2019. This castle in Downtown Waco, Texas, was originally built in 1913. This renovation process got its own mini-series of six episodes leading up to the final reveal.
The main beauty of the Fixer-Upper show is that every property requires a diamond-in-the-rough treatment. This castle was based in an isolated area, with all its original glory dusted in ruins. With over 6000 square foot area to pour their creativity on, the couple took the challenge of renovating the 129-year-old property.
The series divides the entire process into developmental phases, starting from ideating designs, which took them three years to finalize, after which began the actual renovation.
When Did Chip and Joanna Finish the Castle?
They finished renovating the castle with a final reveal in around 2022. Fans were ecstatic to see the interior and overall aesthetics of the castle, which stays true to its time period. Joanne’s attention to detail in every design, decor, flair, and vibe made the castle an authentic monument of Waco’s history.
Chip’s skills in renovating from ground zero established a strong foundation for the castle.
In 2023, Joanne blogs about her experience in leaving aside her farmhouse roots of designing and adapting to the vintage look of the castle.
“Our primary goal was to honor the significance of the home in the neighborhood and the city.”
She further elaborates on what the castle symbolizes for the couple–
“The castle taught us that sometimes the forgotten things in life don’t need a reinvention but just a little dusting off. And the deep-seated dreams within you and me are worth holding on to,”
“Yes, even the ones 20 years in the making. Because in that waiting, pieces in and around us fall into place, letting that which is meaningful and lasting have its way. When we allow ourselves that space to wait, it’s amazing what beauty reveals itself in the end.”
Chip waited for 20 years to buy this castle. After the Cotton Castle came alive in its original state, they opened it for public tours around July to October last year.
Did Chip and Joanna Sell the Castle?
The couple bought the house at an approx listing price of $425000. However, they have not yet put the property for sale.
With the burning question on everyone’s minds, Chip sat down with Entertainment Tonight to tell his sentiments towards the castle–
“I don’t think Jo and I want to live here, literally. This is a project that I was pursuing for 20 years. The reality is we need to sell it, and we should sell it.”
This was not a mere castle for him but more of a house with great worth–
“But I wonder if it’s not one of those things 10 years from now you don’t look back and wonder, ‘Gosh, should we have kept it? What if somebody in the family wanted it?'”
As a model citizen of the community, Chip explains his responsibility for the neighborhood–
“This neighborhood means so much to us,” Chip said. “I think it would be a disservice to the neighborhood if we turned this into kind of a commercial entity in that way.”
If we had to estimate the selling value of the castle in the current market in that specific location, the price would be somewhere around $2 million, giving them returns of around 300- 350% on their investment.

We love watching all of the fixer upper series. We have watched the 6 mini series of the castle while being worked. That had to have felt like a real honor to be able to – bring back the castle; since Chip for 20 years- wanted to be able to purchase it. Congratulation
