Sadly, the rapper’s loved ones received the tragic news of Big Pokey passing away shortly after his collapse. The pioneering artist passed away on June 18, 2023, at the age of 45.
Big Pokey, whose real name was Milton Powell, was loved by many and had a loyal fanbase. More importantly, he was considered a pillar in the industry as he helped boost hip-hop in the city.

Big Pokey had a performance in Beaumont, Texas, which was on a roll late Saturday night. However, he collapsed onstage during the show. The reason behind the death has not been revealed to the public yet.
When Big Pokey first collapsed, the audience didn’t think it was too severe. As the video started circulating online, no one took it seriously. However, as minutes passed, people realized that something awful had happened.
The rapper had started to stagger mid-song and suddenly began to go backward. Immediately afterward, he fell down, and the audience heard his last sigh through the microphone. Despite the bar staff calling the ambulance right away in an attempt to revive him, the news of Pokey passing away reached everyone soon.
The influence of Big Pokey was so widespread that the mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, tweeted to show his condolences. “Though many called him ‘low key,’ his presence was larger than life in helping to catapult our hip hop scene nationally.”
Many other rappers, singers, and artists have also expressed their condolences and shown how much they appreciated Powell through their tweets and social media posts.
Big Pokey was best known as a part of the Screwed Up Click, a hip-hop collective based in Houston. Some of its members are Big Moe, Lil’ O, and DJ Screw, among others. Powell was one of its original members.
The rapper’s first full-length album, Hardest Pit in the Litter, came out in 1999. Ever since then, the artist has delivered back-to-back hits and furthered the hip-hop game of the city.
Rapper Bun B posted on Instagram saying that he wasn’t ready for the news of Big Pokey passing away. According to the post, Big Pokey was a low-key but humble mountain of a man who moved with honor and respect.
The last album of Big Pokey was a full-length release in 2021, named Sensei. It features appearances from Lil Keke, Kirko Bangz, Devin The Dude, Chamillionaire, Killa Kyleon, Lil’ O, and other rappers.
