Spider-Verse is compounding into a never-ending portal, and we are not complaining!
We are even dropped off in the year 2099, where Spider-Man is reimagined in a futuristic world after the “Heroic Age” (otherwise known as Marvel’s Avengers era). Created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi, this comic book version explores Spider-Man’s journey in Nueva York (renamed New York City).
In this version, we are introduced to Miguel O’Hara, who was a child prodigy, growing up to be a brilliant Irish-Mexican geneticist. Through working at a giant corporation, Alchemax, Miguel applies his genetic studies to create super-powered soldiers called “Corporate Raiders.” Although the experiment seemed fatal, continuing might cost lives.
Gwen Stacy in Spider-Verse passes a comment on Spider-Man’s canine teeth, implying that he may have a Vampiric resemblance. This sparked speculation about whether Miguel was actually a vampire. Let us dissect his true identity.
Does Spider-Man 2099 Have Fangs?
Due to genetic manipulation, Spider-Man 2099 has enlarged canines. These resemble fangs and also secrete paralyzing venom.
Miguel has developed superhuman strength since he is genetically imprinted with spider DNA. This is exhibited in his ability to lift 10 tons, high-speed, supernatural stamina, quick reflexes, and agility while jumping up to 30 feet.
He can release webbing-like adhesive strands from both the back of his wrists. But even more impressive is his quick-healing metabolism, and enhanced sensory acuity, which enables him night-vision and to see at far distances. He can also track facts-moving objects since he is relatively more sensitive to light than normal humans.
Is Spider-Man 2099 a Vampire?
Spider-Man 2099 does have fangs. But can we categorize him as a vampire? NO! Besides the fang aspect, he has no supernatural ability of a vampire. He ages as a normal human, unlike Vampires who are stuck at an age when they are converted and live up to eternity.
Spider-Man also does not have the urge or appetite for human blood, although he is a foodie. The only commonality is the fangs, which even spiders possess. Bats and spiders do have quite a few genetic similarities.
Also, they are a result of an experiment gone wrong. Spider-Man 2099 is one of the versions in Spider-verse, nothing more than that.
How Did 2099 Spider-Man Get His Powers?
Miguel O’Hara lives in a timeline after all the superheroes have died after the civil war. As a proficient geneticist, he is employed at Alcehmax, who brainwashed him to conduct fatal experiments. They also get him addicted to drugs so that he does not leave the corporation. Fed up with his addiction, he finds a resolution by swapping his DNA with his old DNA before his addiction.
However, the plan goes haywire when a jealous colleague changes the DNA sample with a DNA of a spider. Consequently, Miguel is now an integration of 50% Spider DNA. He discovers his powers one by one but conceals his identity since the corporation would harm anyone who was a success in the experiment.
And just like that, O’Hara became a Spider-Man with fangs.
