Some anime appeal to specific demographics like action lovers, sports fanatics, or music enthusiasts. The Blue Giant anime film appeals to the third demographic and is one of the few franchises that expresses a love for jazz.
Beginning with a high school basketball payer whose life changes after attending a jazz concert, it shows Dai’s journey of becoming a jazz musician.
From practicing alone in front of a river bank to performing in front of an overwhelming crowd, Dai’s dream is difficult but not impossible to achieve. Don’t let him hear you called it a dream, though, since he takes it more seriously than you think.
It is a challenging task to convey the passion for music in an anime film. Read on to know if Blue Giant was able to break that barrier.
What Is the Storyline of the Blue Giant Anime Film?
The Blue Giant anime film is a story of three young boys who want to play jazz music. Dai is talent-driven and absolutely loves the genre of music. You can think of him as a typical Shounen hero with all the drive in the world.
His two other band members differ from him. Yukinori is less optimistic but aims for the top nonetheless. He has been playing the genre since he was four and is nothing less than a perfectionist.
The third member, Shunji, is an average college student who gets inspired by Dai’s love for jazz. He steps into the role of a drummer since Dai and Yukinori lack one. Despite having no natural talent, Shinji’s hard work elevates his skills.
Can this team of three students make it big in the highly passionate world of jazz?
Will there be a Blue Giant Anime Series?
There is no news yet of an anime series of Blue Giant. It was released in February in Japan and made above 1 billion yen in revenue. However, its success was overshadowed by its peers. It is possible for the movie to be a standalone installment with no series produced.
The movie was a paradise for music lovers, but the constant stream of songs might have been overwhelming to the general audience. If you like slow-burn films, this is for you; otherwise, you might quickly get bored of it.
However, if any news of a new anime series comes up, we will be the first to inform you, so stay tuned.
When Was Blue Giant Film Released? What Is Its Runtime?
The Blue Giant film was released on February 17, 2023, in Japan, with a runtime of 120 minutes or two hours.
It was initially set to debut in 2022 but was later shifted to 2023. Producers Katsuhiro Takei and Mikito Bizenshima also won the rookie award for the movie.
The anime film brought life into the series, as the manga lacked sound and could never project the music that Dai loves. The movie voices out the emotions of our young players through multiple soundtracks.
Is Blue Giant Manga Finished?
Yes, the original Blue Giant manga ended in August 2016 after receiving ten volumes in total. It has also received two sequel manga series: Blue Giant Supreme and Blue Giant Explorer.
The former received 11 volumes and ended in August 2020, while the latter ended in May 2023 with eight volumes. A fourth series set in New York has also been announced, and it will debut in July 2023.
Blue Giant, being a movie based on jazz, needed to express itself to its audience; however, that’s where it faltered. The 2D and CG animation styles clashed with each other, creating mechanical movements that seemed soulless. The music was undoubtedly beautiful, but it fell short of delivering.
Many viewers claim that they finished the movie only to resort to the manga for a better experience. Are you a fan of the Blue Giant manga too? Tell us what you expect from the movie in the comments below.
