As King Charles III gets coronated on May 6, 2023, Queen Consort Camilla’s title will also be replaced with a new one. She will now be known simply as Queen Camilla.
Queen Elizabeth II had stated that it was her sincere wish for Camilla to be Queen Consort, and now her wish will finally be fulfilled. Her new title has no ‘Consort’ in it, which she had held after Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
Now, before you get confused, Queen Camilla might be the Queen by name, but she is not the monarch. The throne can only be inherited, so spouses cannot become a ruler.
Queen Camilla will also wear a modified version of Queen Mary’s coronation crown. The royal family has successfully sidestepped the controversy regarding the Kohinoor diamond. However, its replacement, the Cullinan diamond, is equally controversial due to its history.
Many are curious about whether Queen Camilla will ever become the monarch in between talks of coronation and heirs and the next monarch. Will she also follow in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth II?
If King Charles Dies, Will Camilla Be Queen?
Camilla did become Queen Camilla but will never become the reigning monarch. Due to tradition, only members of the royal family who are born in the direct line of succession can become the monarch.
The line of succession follows Charles’ blood descendants and skips Queen Camilla entirely. Even if King Charles III dies before Queen Camilla, she will never get the throne, as the successor will be Prince William.
Despite the change in title, Queen Camilla’s situation will not change much. She will support her husband and represent the monarchy at events.
What Is Queen Consort Vs. Queen?
The ‘Queen Consort’ is a title given to the woman who is the wife of the reigning king. ‘Queen’ is the title given to the reigning woman monarch. Camilla might be called Queen, but her position is still that of a Consort.
The decision to drop the ‘Consort’ was due to the fact that “all former Queen consorts have been known as Queen plus their first name.”
The Queen Consort also does not have any government-related duties as it is the monarch’s responsibility, in this case, King Charles III. The Consort’s role is to offer moral support to their spouse and attend public and charity events as a representative of the monarchy.
Now, you might wonder how Queen Elizabeth rose to power as the monarch since she should have ideally been a consort. Queen Elizabeth II succeeded the throne after her father, King George VI, in 1952. Thus she became the ruler of the UK.
Who Is the Next Heir?
The heir to the British throne after King Charles III’s death is Prince William. The order of succession follows Charles’ blood descendants. Queen Camilla has two children from her first marriage, namely Tom and Laura Parker, but they will obviously not be included in the royal family’s list.
If Prince William passes away before King Charles, then the next in line is Prince George of Cambridge. This is because the line of succession follows the children of those who are already in line.
Prince Harry is actually the fifth in line for succession since Prince William has three children. It is almost impossible for him to become the king since the children of Prince William will also have kids.
So now you know the line of succession to the British throne and everything about Queen Camilla and her position. After Queen Elizabeth II, it might be decades or even centuries before the country receives another Queen.
