Born in Anniston in 1935, Penny was an English professor and poet at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

After retiring in 1990, he pursued a career in acting, appearing in over 30 movies and TV series.

He had small roles in films such as Mississippi Burning, My Cousin Vinny, and The Legend of Bagger Vance.

"Bob Penny captivated all of our hearts at Birmingham Festival Theatre and put his all into his work," said Rhonda Erbrick, chairperson of the theater's board.
