In the IGN Fan Fest 2022, Spider-Man: No Way Home co-writer Chris McKenna spoke about the superhit film, and he explained why other supervillains aren't added into the movie.
While the film featured a bunch of returning Spider-Man villains and the plot was ignited by the death of Mysterio and his last con, Quentin Beck didn't return to fight the wall-crawler. But thanks to the concept art of Mysterio fighting Doctor Strange, it seems he almost did.
McKenna said, "We've worked on a few of these now and they'll bring you incredible concept art. You're like 'Wow, someone thought this up, and now it's going to be a set-piece.' So when we didn't know what the movie was quite going to be, we were playing around with a lot of different ideas, you're dealing with the multiverse and a lot of different ideas get thrown around. Brilliant artists are taking their own ideas or taking inspiration from the director, the producers, and making incredible artwork."
In the end, bringing Mysterio back into the fold wasn't one of the things that happened when the multiverse entered the equation, but the team behind the movie certainly had plenty of conversations about all the possibilities.
He added, "We were kicking things around, and then I think Kevin Feige really loved the idea of maybe doing a tag that had something to do with that multiverse. But I remember being across the table from Kevin, and we'd hit a few obstacles for various reasons in the other stories, and he said, 'That tag idea, what if that was the movie? What if that was the act break instead of just waiting for the tag?'"
McKenna said, "Okay, this is the reality now. You can't just be swimming in a million characters. You have to be choosing characters wisely and making sure that they don't overwhelm the story and Peter himself."
