Actor Edward Norton has learned that Pocahontas is his 12th great-grandmother.
Norton discovered this family connection on the PBS shows "Finding Your Roots."
Historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. confirmed Norton's direct descent from Pocahontas and her husband, John Rolfe.
Pocahontas and Rolfe married in Jamestown, VA, in 1614, and Pocahontas died in England three years later.
The show also revealed that Norton's third great-grandfather owned a family of slaves.
Norton expressed discomfort about this part of his family history.
Acknowledging and contending with history is important, Norton said.
The ages of the slaves listed on the census affected Norton deeply.
Julia Roberts' ancestry was also explored in the first episode of the show's ninth season.
